Sanket’s Review: “Heroine” isn’t bad. It’s just that it’s not good.

Cast: Kareenan Kapoor, Randeep Hooda, DIvya Dutta, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Suri, Ranvir Shorey.
Director: Madhur Bhandarkar
Length: 2.30 hours approximately.
From a gay make up designer to a provoking journalist to a smart PR worker, Bhandarkar involves every type of single stereotype that he could have. That’s not a problem yet! The problem with these characters is that they have been served with very lame dialogues and mostly the characters are converted into caricatures who definitely serve you few unintentional laughs. One can easily make out that there wasn’t much interest shown in the making of the film. The reason is because neither the writers’ script worked nor the editor’s scissors! Even the dependent Bhandarkar’s execution was shoddy! Not that the film is bad, but its just not good!
The film also resembles Bhandarkar’s successful FASHION. Over-consumption of alcohol, smoking etc. reminds you of Kangana Ranaut in FASHION. Where as the curveball in Kareena’s career in HEROINE due to personal relationships has lot to match with something of same line in Priyanka’s role in FASHION.
The film has some interesting things happening in first half. The whole Randeep Hooda- Kareena Kapoor track is engaging and is well established. But sadly the writers failed to convert this same story into a poignant one post-intermission where there was bit of scope. Anyways, the first half isn’t as unconvincing and corny as the second half is. The reason is because there are too many sub-plots registering here. However its not easy for anyone to guess out what was the main plot of the film? We see our lady protagonist shifting speedily between high and low points of career. It actually confuses the viewers with whether the film is about how the “Heroine” is rising or how is she “drowning”!
The second half starts well with the Shahana Goswami – Kareena Kapoor track. Although the lesbian part of it was highly avoidable! What was that! Anyways, the film also catch the flight in last 15 minutes but by then its too late for the film to pull up the socks. The middle portion of second half is yawn inducing, especially because the screenplay lacks any strength to bridge the gap between a scene to another.
Music is not encouraging except for “Halkat Jawaani”. The background score though runs within the plot and circumstances of the film. Dialogues are absolute trash. The story and screenplay are major letdown of the enterprise along-with Bhandarkar’s disappointing direction.
HEROINE is Kareena Kapoor’s show all the way. She looks fabulous and performs very well. Definitely not an award worthy performance but still a very good job done in this otherwise lukewarm film! Divya Dutt and Randeep Hooda are other two actors who have lend a good support in their brief characters. Shahana Goswami does show some confidence but the material written for her is very poor. Rest all like Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Suri, Ranvir Shorey etc fails to impress.
HEROINE isn’t a must watch film, but it isn’t an unwatchable affair either! The film surely disappoints, though Kareena never does. Its mediocre attempt from the main team- Writers and director!
Rating- 2/5 (Average).

Sanket’s Review: “Barfi!” is overlong, but extremely endearing a film.

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Ileana, Priyanka Chopra.

Director: Anurag Basu

Length: 2.30 hours approximately.

BARFI this week opens and I must admit it at the onset that it gave me exciting vibe about it. And there were reasons aplenty for the high level of excitement. A deaf-mute, an autistic girl and a debutant actress all in one film! The promos though gave us the feeling of fun, happy film but the film is innocent in its approach and simplistic towards what it had to say.

The film proceeds with too many flashbacks and too many characters to the plot. Though the principle star of the film is Ranbir Kapoor, the story smartly revolves around Ranbir, Ileana and Priyanka Chopraand Saurabh shukla. The film is narrated by Ileana and Shukla with an innovative concept. The gags of the film have a slapstick tone to it but even that comes off sweetly as it has charm and equal sincerity in the atmosphere. Basu smartly embraces comedy, romance and drama under one roof. The moments between Ranbir and Ileana in first half is adorable and engaging as well with a dollop of good humor. Though the film deserves some serious editing weapon because the length is way too long! Its not easy to gallop a film without much dialogues.

Post-intermission too the film has fun hanging around Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor, though the film becomes more serious towards penultimate minutes. Surely, the story works for the film which keeps the charm intact with the film even though the surroundings has enormous change like the suspense revealed in last few minutes. But the film comes off as bit dragged and goes overlong despite it is an extremely endearing experience.

Pritam’s music is sheer fantastic. In-fact, the music gives great enhancing support to the film. Every single song in the film is excellent and works with the dynamic situations in the film. WOW. The cinematography is display of sheer genius. Kolkata and Darjeeling are captured fabulously. Basu’s script, screenplay and Direction all are praiseworthy. Come to think of it, how difficult it is to make a film where your main leads are physically challenged and still they are trying to make love. BARFI’s story is exemplary and it also fills the gap for some misgivings.

Ranbir Kapoor yet again delivers an outstanding performance. I don’t understand how much talented is filled in him. Just one expression for his act- spell bounded! Priyanka Chopra plays autistic girl with aplomb. Needless to say its her best act till date and she deserves some accolades. Just notice her in the breakdown moment, your heart will undoubtedly cry for her. Ileana though has minimal role, but she has the spark. She is confident and gorgeous. Saurabh Shukla is superb. His chasing scenes are hilarious.

Overall, BARFI is perfect blend of comedy, romance, and drama. The film though should’ve been trimmed by 20 minutes to create a stauncher impact. It’s a film that guarantees to keep you in happy mode, thanks to our BARFI. The two beautiful performances along with Pritam’s musical magic and Basu’s fine execution make BARFI tastier.

Rating- 3/5 (Good).

Sanket’s Review: “Raaz 3 (3d)” is a compelling horror, but only in spurts.

Cast: Bipasha Basu, Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta.

Director: Vikram Bhatt

Length: 2.10 hours approximately

RAAZ 3, this week’s new outing, a horror, is film that definitely carries some thrilling sequences and also the sound effects work wheel within wheel. And what else, RAAZ 3 surrenders itself to only horror scenes without even giving half importance to the script which started on an interesting note! Thus resulting in some yawn inducing moments as well!

RAAZ 3 is undoubtedly the weakest installment in this series but its much better than some other sequels which Bhatt camp have served with likes of MURDER 2 and JISM 2. The film starts with detailing and we are served with three characters, the three poignant roles of this flick, who are well known for their work in film industry. It wouldn’t have been an issue even if the film wouldn’t have had a single horror sequences for first 45-50 minutes! Really! The issue is they compromise a challenging script just to give goose bumps to the viewers. Frankly, some horror sequences are noteworthy but some falls flat on face.

Also the culmination is tame and damn predictable. The proceedings only get worsened post-intermission, though there is one excellent horror scene here as well. That scene alone distracts you from several lapses that RAAZ 3 suffers from.

The music is poor. Apart from “Deewana kar” there’s not a single song which you can take away with you. The background score isn’t loud and used very seldom which enhances the value. Superb! Vikram Bhatt’s direction is decent which reflects in some of the scenes.

Emraan Hashmi invests earnestness in his role which get sidelined at some point of time. Bipasha Basu also registers a good performance. Esha Gupta doesn’t allows her acting instincts to flow out and her character turns out to be a caricature. This also is a blame on the part of writers who failed to make anything out of this poignant character.

RAAZ 3 is compelling horror, but only in spurts. Watch it on a day when you have nothing better to do. Strictly average fare!
